  • And more!

They say that the three most difficult things in life are death, divorce, and moving. Now, I may be a little biased, but I don’t believe that moving has to be that bad. Moving into a new home is an opportunity to start a new chapter in your life. From the cleanse — donating and throwing out things you don’t need anymore; to the upgrade — looking into what the world has to offer today and where you are now. Our new homes are literally and figuratively a space that reflects how we’re evolving.

However, this invigorating feeling of “new” comes with a lot of work. As someone who just signed her first ever lease, I can’t tell you enough that there is a LOT that goes into moving into a new home. From insurance, Wifi, and parking to a full spice cabinet and cleaning supplies checklist — there is a lot more than just furniture that fills your little home.

It’s my goal to share with you these starting checklists, so you can easily get everything you need. You can get everything on that list, or just save what you need and customize it by browsing other stores.

HOME DECOR IDEAS

Finally, we can focus on the fun stuff. Now that we have cleared the basics of everything you need when getting started in a new home, we can move on to the best part of a new house — decorating it!

Moving into a new home is a great opportunity to reflect on what you already have because you get the chance to repurpose your existing furniture. However, now is also a great time to take advantage of your situation and add some new pieces that better suit your new space.

Whether it be an apartment, condo, house, van…you name it…the way you fill a space matters. Each room has its own purpose and it’s important to take each room’s purpose into consideration. How do you make your office a space of productivity and focus? How do you make your bedroom a place of relaxation and sanctuary? These are all important questions to ask yourself when decorating your new home.

Use these curated home decor guides as inspiration. You can save individual products you love from each guide, or copy the entire guide to use for yourself. Have fun!

FAQS

What essentials do you need for a new home?

For a full checklist of home essentials, see the lists we feature on this page! However, aside from products, it is essential that you:

  • Setup wifi & utilities on or before the date you move in.
  • Changed your mailing address — you don’t want anything going to your old place!
  • Confirmed all the smoke detectors are working.
  • Had a pest control company come check your place to make sure everything is okay.
  • Change the locks, the old owner should not have access to your new home.

How do I prepare for Moving?

My biggest piece of advice when it comes to preparing to move…is to start earlier than you think. I recommend beginning around 8 weeks before your move in date. This will give you plenty of time to start sorting through your belongings so you can donate what you don’t need before you move on to your next adventure.

Additionally, I would begin packing up the items you need, but don’t see yourself using in the near future. Think holiday decorations, costumes, decorative home decor pieces, and just about anything non-essential. Your future self will thank you when it’s a week before moving day and you have to tackle organizing your kitchen.

What should I do a week before moving?

The week before you move to a new home is a big week! It always seems like there is never enough time to get everything done that you need. However, a week before moving, I would first confirm that everything is set to go with the movers. You want to make sure they have you booked and are ready to go.

Next, I would begin packing a bag of everything you will need to survive while the majority of your belongings are boxed up. Pack leisure clothes, your toiletries, technology essentials, medicine, and anything else you can’t live without!
